Sleeping Dentistry

Safety is one of our long list of priorities, that’s why we use Nitrous Oxide as a safe and effective sedative. It is inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose to help you relax.

It is not always used to relax the patient, it is a procedure that is recommended by the dentist.

Our office is open 6 days a week. And we accept different dental insurance plans (your insurance is most likely accepted at our office yet better to check with our office at (905) 521-2221.

Sleep Dentistry in Hamilton — Nitrous Oxide and Oral Sedation for Anxiety-Free Treatment

You’ve cancelled two appointments already. You need a filling replaced, or a tooth that’s been aching for months looked at, but the thought of sitting in the chair makes your chest tight. You searched “sedation dentistry hamilton anxiety” because you know you need treatment and you know you can’t get through it without help.

At Red Rose Dentistry, we treat anxious patients every day—not occasionally, not reluctantly. We offer nitrous oxide and oral sedation so you can get the treatment you need calmly and comfortably. This page explains what each option feels like, what it costs, and how to book an appointment that doesn’t trigger dread.

What Each Sedation Option Feels Like — So You Know What to Expect

Most anxious patients fear the unknown more than the procedure. You’ve never had sedation, so you don’t know what it feels like, and that uncertainty feeds the anxiety. Here is what each level of sedation actually feels like, described by patients who’ve experienced it.

    Nitrous oxide (laughing gas):
“You feel floaty. Like the moment just before you fall asleep, but you’re still awake. Your hands and feet might feel warm or tingly. Sounds seem distant—you can hear the dentist talking but it doesn’t register as something to worry about. Time moves faster than you expect. Twenty minutes feels like five. When the mask comes off, you’re back to normal within three to five minutes. You can drive yourself home.”

Nitrous oxide is inhaled through a small mask that sits over your nose. The gas is mixed with oxygen—you’re actually breathing more oxygen during sedation than you normally do. You remain conscious and able to respond to instructions (“open a bit wider”). You just don’t care about what’s happening. The anxiety is turned down, not off—but turned down enough that treatment feels manageable.

    Oral sedation:
“You take a pill about an hour before the appointment. By the time you arrive, you feel drowsy and detached. Some patients fall asleep during treatment and wake up with the procedure finished. Others stay awake but feel deeply relaxed, with little memory of the appointment afterward. You need someone to drive you home. The drowsiness lasts 2–4 hours after the appointment.”

Oral sedation is a prescribed medication taken before your visit. It provides deeper relaxation than nitrous oxide. It’s the right choice for patients with moderate to severe anxiety, strong gag reflexes, or complex procedures that require longer appointments.

Local anesthetic only (with anxiety management):
For some patients, knowing sedation is available as a backup is enough. You come in, we talk through the procedure, we agree on a stop signal (raising your hand), and we proceed at your pace. If you feel anxious mid-procedure, we pause. If you need nitrous oxide, we add it. The control is always in your hands.

Who Sedation Dentistry Is For — Adults, Children, and Special Needs Patients

Sedation dentistry is not just for people with diagnosed dental phobia. It helps anyone who:

    • Has had a previous traumatic dental experience

    • Has a strong gag reflex that makes treatment difficult

    • Needs extensive treatment in a single appointment

    • Has sensitive teeth that make even cleanings uncomfortable

    • Has a needle phobia

    • Has difficulty sitting still for long periods

    • Has special needs that make dental treatment challenging

At Red Rose Dentistry, sedation is available to any patient who needs it. There’s no threshold of anxiety you have to prove. If you tell us you’re nervous, we offer sedation—no questions, no judgment.

For children who need sedation, see our dedicated sedation dentistry for kids page. The same options are available, adapted for pediatric patients.

What Sedation Costs at Red Rose Dentistry

    Sedation TypeCostIncluded WithRecovery
Nitrous oxide$50Included at no charge for surgical extractions and implant placementImmediate — drive yourself home
Oral sedation$150–$300Not included in procedure fees2–4 hours drowsiness — need ride home

Nitrous oxide is included at no extra charge for:

    • Surgical wisdom tooth extractions

    • Dental implant placement

    • Complex or multiple extractions

For routine fillings, cleanings, and root canals, nitrous oxide is available for $50. Most anxious patients tell us it’s the best $50 they’ve ever spent on dental care.

Insurance: Sedation is typically not covered by dental insurance unless it’s medically necessary (severe anxiety with documentation, certain special needs). We’ll check your coverage before treatment and tell you if sedation is included.

Procedures We Commonly Use Sedation For

Any dental procedure can be performed with sedation. The ones where patients most commonly request it:

    • Wisdom teeth removal — nitrous oxide included for surgical cases

    • Root canal treatment — nitrous oxide available; oral sedation for severe anxiety

    • Dental implant placement — nitrous oxide included

    • Fillings and crown preparations — nitrous oxide available

    • Deep cleanings — nitrous oxide available

    • Multiple procedures in one appointment — oral sedation often recommended

If you need treatment and you’re anxious, tell us when you book. We’ll schedule extra time, prepare the sedation you need, and make sure your appointment is the opposite of what you’re dreading.

Your First Visit — What to Expect When You’re Anxious

Rachel, the patient from Burlington, hadn’t seen a dentist in four years when she called us. She’d been putting off a cracked filling because her last dental experience—in her 20s—was with a dentist who dismissed her pain and worked too fast. She was terrified of a repeat experience.

Here is how Rachel’s first visit went:

Before the appointment: Rachel told our front desk team she was anxious. They booked her for a longer appointment slot so nothing would feel rushed. They told her sedation was available—she just had to ask.

Arriving: Rachel came to our James Street clinic. Free parking meant one less thing to worry about. She checked in and was taken to the treatment room within minutes—no long wait to build up anxiety.

The consultation: Dr. Firas sat down and asked Rachel what had happened before. Not “what do you need done today.” What had made her afraid. Rachel told him about the dentist who dismissed her. Dr. Firas listened, then said: “That shouldn’t have happened. Here’s how we’re going to make sure it doesn’t happen today.”

The agreement: Dr. Firas explained the stop signal—Rachel would raise her left hand if she needed a break, for any reason, at any time. No questions asked. He explained that nitrous oxide was available and described what it would feel like. He told her she could change her mind about sedation at any point.

The treatment: Rachel chose nitrous oxide. The mask was placed over her nose. Within two minutes, she felt the warmth and floating sensation. Dr. Firas replaced her filling. Rachel was aware of what was happening but felt detached from it—like watching it happen to someone else.

Afterward: The mask came off. Rachel was back to normal within minutes. She told Dr. Firas: “I can’t believe I put this off for four years.”

The option to start slow: If Rachel hadn’t felt ready for treatment at the first visit, we would have done a consultation only—no treatment. She would have met Dr. Firas, seen the clinic, and left. Some patients need one no-treatment visit before they’re ready. Others are ready immediately. Both paths are available. There is no pressure either way.

Questions Hamilton Patients Ask About Sedation Dentistry

What if I’m still anxious even with sedation?

This is a common fear—that the sedation won’t be enough, and you’ll be trapped in the chair feeling panicked. Here’s the reality: you can have more sedation if you need it. If nitrous oxide isn’t enough, we can increase the concentration. If you chose local anesthetic only and feel anxious mid-procedure, we can add nitrous oxide. You are never stuck. You are never trapped. The stop signal always works. We stop, we adjust, and we only continue when you’re comfortable.

    Will I be unconscious?

No. Nitrous oxide keeps you conscious and responsive. Oral sedation makes you drowsy and you may fall asleep naturally, but you are not unconscious in the medical sense—you can be woken, you can respond, and you’re breathing independently. We do not offer general anesthesia (full unconscious sedation) in our clinic. If your anxiety or procedure requires that level of sedation, we refer you to a surgical center.

Can someone stay with me during treatment?

Yes. For nitrous oxide, a family member or friend can stay in the treatment room with you. For oral sedation, we recommend they wait in the reception area—the treatment room needs to stay quiet and calm while you’re sedated. Discuss your preference when you book.

I’m not just anxious—I’m embarrassed about my teeth and the condition they’re in. Will I be judged?

No. Patients who have been avoiding the dentist for years often feel shame about the condition of their teeth. Dr. Firas and Dr. Abeer do not lecture. They do not judge. They treat the teeth in front of them and focus on getting you healthy going forward. Rachel, the patient from Burlington, told us afterward: “I was more scared of being judged than I was of the drilling. And nobody judged me. Not once.”

Treatment Without Terror — Book an Appointment That Feels Different

You’ve been putting off dental work because of fear. You know sedation exists—now you know what it feels like, what it costs, and that you can start with a no-treatment visit if you’re not ready for the full appointment.

Call Red Rose Dentistry at (905) 521-2221. Tell our front desk team you’re anxious. Tell them what happened before, if you want to. They’ll book you for a longer appointment slot, explain your sedation options, and answer every question you have.

If you want to start with a no-treatment consultation—just meet Dr. Firas, see the clinic, and leave—say that when you call. No pressure. No judgment. Just a path back to dental health that doesn’t require white-knuckling through fear.
