Wisdom Teeth Extraction in Hamilton — Cost, Sedation Options, and Same-Day Pain Relief

It started as a dull ache and now you can’t close your mouth without wincing. You’re a student with no insurance and a limited budget, or you’re a parent whose teenager needs four wisdom teeth out, and you searched “wisdom teeth removal hamilton cost” because you need to know what this will cost before you pick up the phone.

At Red Rose Dentistry, a simple wisdom tooth extraction costs $200 to $350. A surgical extraction for an impacted tooth costs $400 to $700. Nitrous oxide sedation is included at no extra charge for all surgical extractions. This page covers exact pricing, sedation options, the recovery timeline, and how to book an emergency appointment today.

What Wisdom Teeth Removal Costs at Red Rose Dentistry

Here are the all-in costs for wisdom tooth extraction at our James Street clinic. These prices include the extraction, local anesthetic, and nitrous oxide for surgical cases.

Extraction TypeCost Per ToothSedation IncludedTypical Procedure Time
Simple extraction (tooth fully erupted)$200–$350Local anesthetic included; nitrous oxide +$5020–40 minutes
Surgical extraction (partially impacted)$400–$550Local + nitrous oxide included45–60 minutes
Surgical extraction (fully impacted, bone removal)$550–$700Local + nitrous oxide included60–90 minutes
All four wisdom teeth (combination)$1,200–$2,200Nitrous oxide included for surgical teeth90–120 minutes total
    Consultation + X-ray$120N/A15–20 minutes

The consultation fee is credited toward your extraction if done same-day or within 30 days. If you come in for an emergency exam and the tooth is removed during the same visit, you pay only the extraction fee—not the exam fee on top.

    What affects cost:

    • Tooth position — fully erupted teeth cost less; fully impacted teeth requiring bone removal cost the most

    • Number of teeth — removing all four at once costs less per tooth than removing them individually

    • Sedation choice — nitrous oxide is included for surgical extractions; oral sedation adds $150–$300

For a broader guide on all extraction costs, including non-wisdom teeth, see our tooth extraction cost guide.

Payment plans: We offer in-house payment arrangements with no credit check and no interest. If you’re a student with no insurance, you don’t need to pay the full amount upfront. A typical plan is 30% deposit with the balance in monthly payments. Discuss your situation when you call—we’ll work with you.

Insurance: Most dental insurance plans cover 70–80% of extraction costs. We submit your claim electronically and you pay only your portion. If your insurance can’t be verified same-day, you pay at time of service and we provide the paperwork for reimbursement.

CDCP: The Canadian Dental Care Plan covers medically necessary extractions. We verify your CDCP eligibility before treatment so you know exactly what’s covered.

Sedation Options for Wisdom Teeth Removal

You don’t have to be awake and aware for your extraction. We offer three levels of sedation to match your anxiety level and the complexity of your procedure.

    Sedation LevelHow It WorksBest ForCost
Local anesthetic onlyInjection numbs the area; you’re fully awakeSimple extractions; no dental anxietyIncluded in extraction fee
Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)Inhaled through nasal mask; relaxed but awake; effects wear off immediatelyMild to moderate anxiety; longer procedures$50 for simple; included for surgical
Oral sedationPill taken before appointment; drowsy, may sleep through procedure; needs ride homeModerate to severe anxiety; complex surgical cases$150–$300

Why nitrous oxide is included for surgical extractions: We believe surgical extraction is stressful enough without adding cost anxiety. Nitrous oxide takes the edge off, keeps you comfortable, and wears off within minutes of the mask being removed. You can drive yourself home. You can go back to your day. There’s no recovery downtime from the sedation itself.

For full details on how each sedation method works, see our sedation dentistry page.

What to discuss at your consultation: If you have dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, or a previous traumatic extraction experience, tell Dr. Firas or Dr. Abeer. They’ll adjust the sedation plan accordingly. Oral sedation may be the right choice even for a simple extraction if your anxiety is high.

Wisdom Teeth Removal Process at Red Rose Dentistry

    Step 1: Examination and X-ray
Dr. Firas or Dr. Abeer examines the tooth and takes a targeted X-ray to see the root structure, the tooth’s angle, and its relationship to the nerve in your jaw. This takes 15–20 minutes. At the end, you know whether you need a simple or surgical extraction and your exact cost.

Step 2: Treatment Plan and Cost
You receive a written plan showing the extraction type, sedation level, and all-in cost. If multiple teeth need removal, you’ll see the price per tooth and the total. You approve treatment before anything begins.

    Step 3: Extraction
Local anesthetic is administered. Once the area is fully numb (tested, not assumed), the tooth is removed. For simple extractions, the tooth is loosened and lifted out. For surgical extractions, a small incision is made in the gum, bone may be removed to access the tooth, and the tooth may be sectioned into pieces for easier removal. You feel pressure but not pain.

    Step 4: Aftercare Instructions
You receive written aftercare instructions and any necessary prescriptions (pain medication, antibiotics if infection was present). You’ll know what to expect for swelling, bleeding, diet, and activity over the next 72 hours.

    Step 5: Follow-up (If Needed)
Most simple extractions need no follow-up. Surgical extractions may include a follow-up at one week to check healing and remove sutures if non-dissolving sutures were used.

If you’re in pain and need treatment immediately, our emergency dental services accommodate same-day extractions. Call in the morning for the best availability.

Recovery — What to Expect Day by Day

    First 24 hours:

    • Bleeding: Light oozing is normal. Bite on gauze for 30–60 minutes. Replace as needed.

    • Swelling: Apply ice packs to the outside of your face — 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off.

    • Pain: Take prescribed or over-the-counter medication before the local anesthetic wears off.

    • Diet: Cold liquids and soft foods only. Nothing hot. No straws — sucking can dislodge the blood clot.

    • Activity: Rest. No exercise, no heavy lifting.

    Days 2–3:

    • Swelling peaks around 48 hours, then begins to subside.

    • Pain decreases. Most patients switch from prescription medication to ibuprofen or acetaminophen.

    • Diet: Soft foods — yogurt, soup, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes. Still no straws.

    • Oral hygiene: Gentle salt water rinses after 24 hours. Brush carefully, avoiding the extraction site.

    Days 4–7:

    • Swelling and discomfort mostly resolved for simple extractions. Surgical sites may still be tender.

    • Diet: Gradually return to normal foods, chewing on the opposite side.

    • Sutures: If non-dissolving sutures were used, they’re removed at the one-week follow-up.

Dry socket prevention: Dry socket occurs when the blood clot at the extraction site is dislodged, exposing bone and nerve. It’s painful and delays healing. To prevent it: no straws, no smoking, no vigorous rinsing for at least 72 hours. If you experience sudden, severe pain 3–5 days after extraction, call us — dry socket is treatable in a single appointment.

What Happens If You Don’t Remove a Problem Wisdom Tooth

Impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth don’t resolve on their own. Leaving a problem tooth untreated leads to:

Infection: Partially erupted teeth create a pocket where bacteria collect. The result is pericoronitis — infection of the gum tissue around the tooth — causing pain, swelling, and difficulty opening your mouth. This can become a serious infection requiring antibiotics and emergency extraction.

Damage to adjacent teeth: An impacted wisdom tooth pushing against the molar in front of it can cause decay, gum disease, or even resorption of the healthy tooth’s root. You risk losing a healthy molar to save a wisdom tooth that will eventually need removal anyway.

Cyst formation: In rare cases, an impacted tooth can form a cyst in the jawbone that damages bone structure and adjacent teeth. Early removal prevents this.

If you eventually lose the adjacent molar due to wisdom tooth damage, replacement with a dental implant costs significantly more than removing the wisdom tooth now.

What to Expect at Your Consultation

Your consultation takes 20–30 minutes. If you’re in pain, we can often do the extraction during the same visit.

    What happens:

    1. You describe your symptoms — what hurts, when it started, whether you have swelling or fever.

    2. Dr. Firas or Dr. Abeer examines the tooth and takes an X-ray.

    3. You receive a written treatment plan with the extraction type, sedation level, and exact cost.

    4. If you’re ready to proceed and the schedule allows, treatment begins immediately. If not, you book the next available appointment.

Free parking is available at our James Street clinic.

Questions Hamilton Patients Ask About Wisdom Teeth Removal

How do I know if my wisdom tooth needs to come out?

Pain, swelling, difficulty opening your mouth, or a bad taste near the back of your mouth are signs the tooth is infected or impacted. Even without pain, your dentist may recommend removal if an X-ray shows the tooth is growing at an angle that will damage adjacent teeth. A consultation with an X-ray gives you a definitive answer.

Can I get all four wisdom teeth out at once?

Yes. Removing all four at once is common and often more cost-effective than removing them individually — you pay for one sedation session, one recovery period, and the per-tooth cost is often lower when done together. The procedure takes 90–120 minutes. Recovery from four extractions is more intense than one — expect 5–7 days of significant swelling and a soft food diet — but you only go through it once.

Is it better to take them out early, even if they’re not hurting?

In many cases, yes. Wisdom teeth are easier to remove and recovery is faster when you’re younger (teens to early 20s) because the roots are not fully formed and the bone is more flexible. Waiting until pain develops often means the tooth is already causing problems — infection, decay on adjacent teeth, or cyst formation — that complicate the extraction and increase cost.

Will my face swell, and how long does it last?

Yes, swelling is normal and expected. It peaks around 48 hours after surgery and subsides over the following 3–5 days. Ice packs applied 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off during the first 24 hours significantly reduce swelling. By day 5–7, most patients look normal for simple extractions. Surgical extraction swelling can last 7–10 days but is manageable with ice and ibuprofen.
