Sensitive Teeth in Hamilton — Diagnosis and Treatment at Red Rose Dentistry
Tooth sensitivity (a sharp, brief pain triggered by cold, heat, sweets, or biting pressure) is one of the most common complaints we treat in Hamilton. At Red Rose Dentistry, we identify the cause first — because the right treatment depends entirely on what is causing the sensitivity — then provide targeted relief, not just a desensitizing toothpaste recommendation.

What Causes Sensitive Teeth?
| Cause | What Is Happening | Treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Dentin hypersensitivity | Exposed dentin (the layer under enamel) — dentin has thousands of microscopic tubules connected to the nerve. Cold/hot/sweets trigger fluid movement in the tubules, activating the nerve. | Desensitizing agent application, fluoride varnish, bonding to seal exposed dentin, night guard if grinding is the cause |
| Gum recession | Exposed root surface has no enamel protection — root is 40% softer than enamel and highly sensitive | Bonding over exposed root, gum graft referral for significant recession |
| Cracked tooth | Flex of crack under biting pressure triggers the nerve | Crown to stabilize the tooth; root canal if nerve is involved |
| Cavity | Decay has reached the dentin layer, exposing nerve pathways | Filling removes the decay and seals the dentin |
| Post-filling sensitivity | Normal inflammatory response to composite placement — resolves in 2–4 weeks | Reassurance + monitoring; bite adjustment if needed |
| Irreversible pulpitis | Severe cold sensitivity lasting 30+ seconds after the stimulus is removed — nerve is inflamed and dying | Root canal treatment |
| New crown sensitivity | Adjusted crown height or cement residue | Bite adjustment; usually resolves within 2–4 weeks |
Does Sensodyne or Desensitizing Toothpaste Actually Work?
Partially — for mild dentin hypersensitivity from exposed root surfaces or minor enamel erosion, potassium nitrate-based toothpastes (Sensodyne) can reduce sensitivity over 4–8 weeks by accumulating in dentin tubules. They are not a treatment for cavities, cracked teeth, or pulpitis — if the sensitivity is from one of those causes, the toothpaste does not help and masks a problem that is getting worse.
In-office desensitizing agents (fluoride varnish, oxalic acid, bonding) work faster and more effectively than over-the-counter products for most cases of dentin sensitivity.
