Does Sensodyne or Desensitizing Toothpaste Actually Work?
Partially — for mild dentin hypersensitivity from exposed root surfaces or minor enamel erosion, potassium nitrate-based toothpastes (Sensodyne) can reduce sensitivity over 4–8 weeks by accumulating in dentin tubules. They are not a treatment for cavities, cracked teeth, or pulpitis — if the sensitivity is from one of those causes, the toothpaste does not help and masks a problem that is getting worse.
In-office desensitizing agents (fluoride varnish, oxalic acid, bonding) work faster and more effectively than over-the-counter products for most cases of dentin sensitivity.
