When Is Emergency Extraction Necessary?
- Severe infection/abscess: When an infected tooth cannot be treated with root canal (root canal feasibility depends on tooth condition and bone levels), extraction is the only way to eliminate the infection source
- Irreparably fractured tooth: A tooth split vertically below the bone level cannot be restored — extraction is required
- Severe decay with no remaining structure: When insufficient tooth structure remains to hold a filling or crown, extraction is necessary
- Dental abscess with facial swelling: Urgent extraction may be needed to source-drain the infection after initial antibiotic management
- Partially erupted wisdom tooth causing acute pericoronitis: Antibiotics and irrigation first, extraction planned within 1–2 weeks
What to Expect at an Emergency Extraction at Red Rose Dentistry
- Assessment and X-ray (10–15 min): We confirm the tooth is not restorable and assess the root anatomy and bone level — this informs whether the extraction will be straightforward or surgical
- Anaesthesia: Local anaesthetic is administered before any extraction. If anxiety is an issue, we offer nitrous oxide (no advance booking needed for gas). You feel pressure and movement — not pain.
- Extraction: Simple extractions: 5–15 minutes. Surgical extractions (impacted, broken at gum line): 20–45 minutes.
- Post-extraction care: Gauze pressure, verbal and written aftercare instructions, prescription for pain management if needed. Antibiotics if infection was present.
After Your Emergency Extraction — Critical First 24 Hours
- Bite on gauze firmly for 30–60 minutes. Do not check or change the gauze constantly.
- No rinsing, spitting, or using straws for 24 hours — suction dislodges the blood clot and causes dry socket
- Soft diet for 48–72 hours
- Ice packs: 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off for the first 6 hours
- Take pain medication before the anaesthetic fully wears off — do not wait for pain to build
- If bleeding does not slow within 1 hour: call us or go to emergency
