What To Do Immediately When a Filling Falls Out
- Do not panic. Swallowing a filling is harmless — it will pass. (Porcelain pieces are not swallowable — find the piece and bring it to the appointment.)
- Avoid chewing on that side. The exposed cavity floor is now unprotected dentin. Temperature changes and bite pressure will cause sensitivity.
- Rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water. This reduces bacterial load around the exposed area.
- Temporary filling material from a pharmacy is acceptable for 24–48 hours if you absolutely cannot be seen immediately. Dentemp and similar products are available at most pharmacies. Do not use this as a substitute for professional treatment — temporary materials are soft and cannot seal the cavity effectively for more than a day or two.
