What To Do Immediately When a Filling Falls Out

1. Do not panic. Swallowing a filling is harmless — it will pass. (Porcelain pieces are not swallowable — find the piece and bring it to the appointment.)
2. Avoid chewing on that side. The exposed cavity floor is now unprotected dentin. Temperature changes and bite pressure will cause sensitivity.
3. Rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water. This reduces bacterial load around the exposed area.
4. Temporary filling material from a pharmacy is acceptable for 24–48 hours if you absolutely cannot be seen immediately. Dentemp and similar products are available at most pharmacies. Do not use this as a substitute for professional treatment — temporary materials are soft and cannot seal the cavity effectively for more than a day or two.
5. Call us for a same-day appointment. The sooner the filling is replaced, the less chance bacteria have had to colonize the exposed cavity.
