Pregnancy Dental Care Hamilton Ontario 2026 — Safe All Trimesters
Dental care during pregnancy is safe and essential in all three trimesters. In fact, pregnancy hormones significantly increase your risk of gum disease, cavities, and enamel erosion — and untreated gum disease is linked to premature birth and low birth weight. Red Rose Dentistry in Hamilton Ontario welcomes pregnant patients and participates in CDCP for free prenatal dental care for eligible patients.

Is Dental Care Safe During Pregnancy? Yes — Here’s the Evidence
- Local anesthetic is safe — Lidocaine (used at Red Rose) is Category B safe for pregnancy. We avoid epinephrine with caution in first trimester on request.
- Dental X-rays are safe with lead apron — We always use a leaded thyroid collar and apron. Digital X-rays emit minimal radiation. We only take what’s needed.
- Nitrous oxide is avoided in pregnancy — We use local anesthetic only; nitrous oxide is not recommended in first trimester.
- Routine cleanings are recommended — Canadian Dental Association recommends at least one additional cleaning during pregnancy (total 3x that year).
Pregnancy-Specific Dental Issues to Watch For
| Issue | Why It Happens | What We Do |
|---|---|---|
| Pregnancy gingivitis | Hormones make gums hyper-reactive to plaque | Professional cleaning + brushing technique |
| Pregnancy tumour (granuloma) | Benign overgrowth on gum tissue — bleeds easily | Monitoring; removal after birth if needed |
| Enamel erosion | Morning sickness acid erodes enamel | Fluoride treatment; rinse with water not brush after vomiting |
| Dry mouth | Hormonal change + mouth breathing when congested | Hydration, xylitol gum, more frequent cleanings |
| Cavity risk increase | Sugar cravings + bacteria shifts in saliva | More frequent cleanings + fluoride varnish |
Best Time for Dental Treatment During Pregnancy
- First trimester (weeks 1–13): Routine care safe; elective procedures deferred if possible; no nitrous
- Second trimester (weeks 14–26): Optimal time for all dental treatment including fillings, root canals, extractions
- Third trimester (weeks 27–40): Routine care safe; long appointments may be uncomfortable; emergency treatment always available

Tips for Oral Health During Pregnancy
- Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste — extra important now
- After morning sickness vomiting: rinse with 1 tsp baking soda in water; wait 30 min before brushing (acid softens enamel)
- Eat calcium-rich foods: dairy, leafy greens, almonds — your baby uses your calcium for tooth development
- Avoid sugary drinks and snacks between meals
- Book at least one extra cleaning during pregnancy — gum health directly affects your baby
Gum Disease in Pregnancy — The Stakes Are High
Untreated periodontal (gum) disease during pregnancy is associated with:
- Premature birth (before 37 weeks)
- Low birth weight (<2,500g)
- Preeclampsia
This is why we take pregnancy cleanings seriously. CDCP covers scaling and root planing — gum disease treatment — at $0 for eligible pregnant patients.
